Yoga for Digestion: Awakening the Inner Fire
In yoga, digestion is often connected with inner fire. When this fire is balanced, food is digested well, energy is steady, and the body feels light. When digestion is weak, we may feel bloated, tired, heavy, or uncomfortable.
Yoga supports digestion through movement, twisting, breathing, and relaxation. Many digestive issues become worse when we are stressed. So, calming the mind is just as important as moving the abdomen.
Start with gentle belly breathing. Sit or lie down and place one hand on the stomach. As you inhale, feel the belly rise. As you exhale, feel it fall. This simple practice relaxes the abdominal muscles and supports the digestive system.
Twisting poses are very useful. Practice Seated Spinal Twist, Supine Twist, and Half Lord of the Fishes Pose gently. These postures massage the abdominal area and encourage movement in the digestive organs.
Wind-Relieving Pose is also helpful. Lie on your back and bring one knee toward the chest. Hold it gently, then change sides. You can also bring both knees in together. This posture may help release gas and reduce bloating.
Avoid doing strong yoga immediately after meals. Give the body time to digest. Gentle walking or simple breathing is better after eating. Practice deeper postures when the stomach is light.
Yoga also teaches mindful eating. When you practice regularly, you become more aware of what foods make you feel fresh and what foods make you feel dull. Yoga is not only a remedy for indigestion. It is a lifestyle that supports healthy digestion every day. A peaceful mind, balanced breath, and regular movement all help the stomach work more naturally.
